Cork County Council say they remain open to the future development of a Campervan Park in Youghal.
Council Senior Executive Officer, Sean O’Callaghan, told the September Sitting of the East Cork Municipality that he was eager to identify sites in Youghal that could open the door to motorhomes, but the time is not yet right.
The Senior Official was responding to a Motion tabled by Sinn Fein Cllr Danielle Twomey who was requesting that the Local Authority would engage with Fáilte Ireland, with a view to forming a viable plan to allow a caravan site to be developed in Youghal.
The former Youghal Town Council had granted Planning for a number of motorhome pitches at Claycastle a number of years ago, on the recommendation of Fáilte Ireland.
However, when the Local Authority applied for the grant aid from the tourist body, they reduced the amount of financial assistance originally promised, as it did not meet their criteria for motorhomes at that time.
Cllr Twomey now wants “feasible sites” sought close to the proposed MY Way biking and walking trail.
However, Mr O’Callaghan said now that the Greenway is proceeding, careful consideration is required in determining what the Council has set for its property adjoining, or near the Greenway.
He said “it might not necessarily meet the strategic needs of the development of a Greenway.
Committee Chairwoman, Cllr Mary Linehan Foley, backing Cllr Twomey’s Motion, said “there is definitely an opening for a campervan facility in Youghal, where you can go in, get your water and plug in.”
The Independent Cllr said she “would be very supportive” of the Motion when the time is right.
Fine Gael Cllr Susan McCarthy agreed and said Council should continue looking for a campervan site in the Youghal area.
Cllr McCarthy, who sits on the Youghal Socio Economic Development Group, said Council needs to support the provision of a campervan park at some location.
She said “It would be remiss of us not to be looking for a site for campervan parking because Youghal badly needs one for tourism and the Ironman.
Ms McCarty added “the impending Greenway should be yet another incentive for us to look at it.”
